When I recently took my cat in for an exam, I was told that she needs to have some cat toys. I thought I was good at getting her to be moving around enough, but her weight stated otherwise. She was always trim and active when she was younger, but now that she is twelve years old, she just doesn’t have the oomph that she once had. It’s quite a dilemma for me with feeding as well, as one cat is too heavy, and one is too thin. However, they both do need to exercise.
Most don’t think about exercise for cats as much as they do dogs. Most know dogs need to get out and walk for their health, but they don’t think that cats need the same. You really can’t take a cat out on a leash (though it is possible) so the next best thing to get is cat toys. If you find the right ones, they are going to love them, and you are going to get them moving quicker than you ever thought. Cats have a hunting instinct, and that almost never fails to kick in.
The best cat toys are the ones that will urge them to hunt. There are many mice and balls that work a bit, but most cats need more than that to keep them interested. They need something that moves across the floor and darts about. This reminds them of prey, and they are going to want to go after it to score the kill. There are some toys with batteries that move around the floor, and those work very well. There are also sticks that have feathers on the end. When they are shaken just right, this form of cat toys will drive your cat nuts. They won’t seem to get enough of it.
Some cat toys are not traditional toys. There are other things that cats seem to love. I always thought it was just my cats, but I have talked to others who have said the same. If your roll up tinfoil into a ball, your cat may chase it around quite a bit. They also love laser pointers. If you sit in one spot and move it around the room in a jerky motion that they can follow, you have just found one of the cat toys that is almost always a hit. They will chase it time and time again, and because it is nothing more than light, they will never catch it. They won’t be discouraged, but they will keep playing.
